LAS VEGAS ANNUAL CONFERENCE: ALWAYS AT UNLV

March 15 - 18, 2010

Online submissions accepted until February 9, 2010

A true researcher is a rebel who challenges complacency. Our conference participants, professors and students, presenting their research over a 4-day span, will be among excellent colleagues at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) which the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has placed within its select category of Research Universities with High Research Activity.

In just half a century, as historian Eugene Moehring puts it, UNLV has been radically transformed from a dusty outpost on the south edge of town to a top-notch urban research institution. Gone are the humble origins when students used to meet for class in the dressing rooms of what was then Las Vegas High School. Today, over 1,000 full-time faculty teach over 28,000 students. The ever-growing campus has added branches specializing in dental medicine, biotechnology, and research and technology.

UNLV's event facilities are unparalleled. With more than 135,000 square feet, UNLV's Student Union (see map: Building #31) is well equipped to host most meetings and events, offering direct competition to the conference facilities of major casinos just a short distance away on the Strip. IJAS gladly accepts the opportunity to host this annual conference in the new and vibrant Student Union building conveniently located off Maryland Parkway. With food vendors outside the conference rooms, extended building hours, and a full staff, UNLV guarantees a wide range of services for our delegates.

IJAS teams up with the very best to make this international conference a unique experience. Apart from selecting the most appropriate academic location that the city can offer, IJAS also singles out the Gray Line bus company as its exclusive carrier for its attendees' cultural excursions. This allows IJAS to offer attendees value for their money both on and off conference premises.

Academic Tracks

For the Las Vegas conference, we invite abstracts, papers, and proposals in any of the following tracks:
  • Social Sciences and Humanities,
  • Business and Economics,
  • Teaching and Education, and
  • Technology and Science.

The best paper in each of these four tracks will be recognized through an engraved plaque. The reviewers will select the winning papers.

The accepted submissions will be clustered around their common topics and areas of interest. As is typical of multidisciplinary conferences, the final program - released about three weeks before the conference - will mirror the research agendas of the delegates rather than a pre-conceived list of arbitrary topics.

It is up to each delegate how much to submit or publish. Some authors may publish only an abstract in the proceedings. Others may prefer to publish a full-length manuscript in the journal.

Delegates may also attend a conference without submitting or publishing any research.

Authors may deliver their work during the conference either as (i) a regular presentation, (ii) a poster session, (iii) a panel, or (iv) a workshop.

Room setups at the conference shall be amenable to different types of presentations.

Major Tours (including the Grand Canyon) for our Attendees

Although the research presentations will last four days, not all participants may want to attend every single day of the conference. As an alternative, in parallel with the conference presentations, each conference delegate that registers for the 4-day conference is entitled up to $100 in refunds on Gray Line tours originating out of Las Vegas during March 15-18, 2010. The refunds are in addition to discounts that may be offered by Gray Line to all its customers.

The tours include:
      • Hoover Dam Tour,
      • Colorado River Raft Tour,
      • Grand Canyon Tour, and
      • Red Rock Tour.

After the tour, registrants shall submit proof-of-purchase of the Gray Line tickets to IJAS' Conference Department. A special refund form will be included in the welcome package received by each registrant to our conference.

Within 15 days after IJAS receives the refund form and the proof-of-purchase, it will issue up to a total of $100 in refunds. As long as the ticket/s and the refund form are submitted by the conference registrant, and were used for the sole benefit of the registrant within the four days of the conference, IJAS shall issue up to a maximum $100 in total refunds to the registrant. It makes no difference how many tickets are bought by the registrant; the refund is limited to $100 per registrant up to the first $100 paid by the registrant for the Gray Line tour tickets.

The refund offer does not apply to 1-day conference registrants. It only applies to those (including registered guests) that pay the $340 or $540 registration fee for the 4-day conference. The refund offer is open to both our American and non-American delegates.

The refund form, without the required proof-of-purchase and conditions, has no cash value.

For a schedule of Gray Line's tours and hotel pickup times click here. There will be no pickup from the UNLV campus. Conference registrants may buy the tickets from the Gray Line website or from the various hotels and tour vendors in Las Vegas.

Submit Your Research

To submit your abstract
for presentation at this conference, click
here.

The most important dates to remember are as follows:

    • The deadline for online submissions for the conference reviewers' consideration is Febuary 9, 2010.
    • The registration deadline is Febuary 16, 2010
    • The conference will be held during March 15 - 18, 2010.
    • For publication purposes, all final-formatted versions of abstracts or full papers should be submitted up to one week after the conference. However, for a properly formatted manuscript to be considered for a track award, it must be emailed to us at least five weeks before the conference.

Within a few days of receiving your online abstract submission, we will notify you of the reviewers' acceptance or rejection, for the conference.

If we inform you that it is an acceptance and you would like to publish your research, follow the model format here and email your formatted document to us.

Abstracts and summarized articles will be published in the proceedings entitled Conference of the International Journal of Arts and Sciences, in CD-ROM format (ISSN 1943-6114).

Full length manuscripts may be published in the International Journal of Arts and Sciences, also in CD-ROM format (ISSN 1944-6934). The review process for the journal is slower (since it involves an extra stage of reviewing) and more demanding in its standards. Although both the proceedings and the journal are refereed, research that meets the refereed standards for the conference may not meet the refereed standards for the journal. Also, a conference delegate may either publish in the proceedings or the journal, not both.

The journal used to be distributed by IJAS in hard copy format. It is now in CD-ROM format since this makes it easier to disseminate articles (click for examples). Each registered author will receive a complimentary copy of the CD-ROM.

Registered authors who prefer a hard copy of the proceedings or journal may download the entire CD-ROM on their own computer and publish and order a hard copy of it from Lulu.com for their own personal use.

Our publications are indexed in both American and European databases.

There is no page limit on articles. We welcome both short and lengthy submissions. We don't impose a financial penalty on lengthy manuscripts.

Each registered author who submits a formatted abstract or paper will receive a complimentary copy of the CD-ROM.

Each registered author, irrespective of whether he or she submits a formatted abstract or paper, will receive a Certificate of Participation.

Powerpoint Presentations
At the conference, each presentation room will be equipped with a laptop, a digital projector and a projector screen. The laptop will be set up for Powerpoint presentations. Linux and Mac users are asked to save their presentations in a compatible format. In the evolving world of Microsoft, save down to the 97-2003 format in order to ward off any problems. You may bring with you about 15 hard copies for the attendees.

Questions about your submission and presentation should be emailed to: conference@internationaljournal.org.

Conference Facilities and Lodging at UNLV

Inside UNLV's Student Union

These stairs inside the Student Union lead up to the conference events on the second floor, above the Starbucks coffee shop which will provide our delegates with complimentary cake and coffee. Eight different eateries, including Pandini's and Panda Express, are available in this building.

The University of Nevada Las Vegas offers economical overnight accommodations right behind the Student Union. Accommodations are converted residence hall rooms, with queen beds. Most have private bathrooms.

There are two issues to consider before opting for campus accomodation. One is the close proximity of the campus to the airport. While the recently built Student Union is perfectly insulated against the noise emanating from low flying planes, the residence hall rooms are not since they were built decades ago before the airport had become so hectic. Another thing to consider is that the campus is relatively "dead" during the evening. It is over a mile away from where all the action is, on the Strip.

At UNLV, the accomodations rate is about $40 per night with an up-front administrative fee of $25 for the entire stay. To book a room at UNLV, one may call Stacey Chambliss at (702) 895-5645 or email her at
stacey.chambliss@unlv.edu. For more information, click here.

Lodging on the Strip
Caesar's Casino comes with shopping opulence. (Photo by Daniel Ramirez)
Las Vegas is the convention center of the world. As a result it has plenty of high quality hotels. According to UNLV's Center for Business & Economic Research, the average hotel room rate is about $120. To extract the lowest room rates, we recommend three particular websites. One is the Travelzoo website which each week runs a list of discounted hotel rooms. This is our favorite site for Las Vegas because it focuses on Las Vegas Boulevard's (a.k.a., the Strip) major hotels. The southern part of the Strip is probably the best location for visitors to Las Vegas. The cheapest major hotel on the Strip is usually Circus Circus (it is shunned by some because of its kiddie circus image but there is nothing kiddie in its well-insulated rooms). We also recommend the official website of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. It extensively covers Vegas' lodging market. The third website is Yahoo's hotel booking site.

For a map of the Strip, click here. For the shortest distance to campus you may proceed by walk (if you are a very good walker) or taxi from where the Strip (i.e, the thick red line on the map) intersects Flamingo Avenue or Tropicana Avenue. If the map were bigger, the UNLV Student Union (where we'll hold the conference) would be to the right of Terrible's (#27). At Terrible's Casino, the lodging is affordable but this casino is a good stretch off the Strip. We strongly recommend lodging at the casinos on the thick red line since this is where all the action is. Ideally find a hotel between Circus Circus (#5) and Luxor (#43). This stretch is very safe, the action never stops, and you may walk freely and enjoy yourself into the night. If you can find a room in this prime estate area at under $50 per night, it's a great deal thanks to the financial plight that Vegas is in.

For those delegates who would be visiting the USA for the first time, please keep in mind that most American hotels charge per room rather than per person.
