AUSTRIA CONFERENCE
June 1 - 4, 2009
June 3, 2009: IJAS delegates gather at Hellbrunn for an unconventional presentation.
Research & Relaxation for Academics in a Spa Hotel
Inside the Norica wine cellar.
Why is it that most political battles in academia surface towards the end of the academic year? Is it due to the pressure that accumulates during the preceding months? When pressure builds up, something has to yield. Stress creates fissures and even the strongest crumble.
Many of our European professors and students hail from cultures that have long understood the paramount importance of relaxation. For those for whom the academic year is a tug-of-war between various responsibilities on campus, ranging from research demands to teaching duties, this conference offers a rejuvenating experience in an intellectual European environment. The old European saying mente sana cuerpo sano realized long ago what holds the key to a healthy intellectual.
It is with this in mind that we selected two of the most prominent spots in the province of Salzburg's Bad Hofgastein. The first is the Congress Center for the presentation of the delegates' research papers. The second is a luxurious 4.5-star hotel, the perfect venue for scholars to come together and share their thoughts and ideas after conference hours while having the opportunity to wind down and relax in this spa hotel. Both locations are within walking distance of each other.
Hotel Norica is connected by an underground tunnel where a short walk leads to one of Austria's most impressive swimming pools, the Alpen Therme, a multi-million Euro complex with the Alps towering above it. The Hotel will provide you with a free bath robe for the duration of your stay, and free daily entrance access to the Alpen Therme. Without the availability of this free daily entrance, the Alpen Therme would charge over 20 Euros for a 4-hour ticket, and over 24 Euros for a day-ticket. Swimming pools, spa and wellness facilities are available both within the Therme and inside the Hotel.
IJAS has reserved a block of double rooms at the Norica for 81 Euros per person per day. Each room comes with a bath/shower, WC, hair dryer, color-cable TV, radio, direct-dial phone, and laptop connection.
Additional charges may include (i) 8 Euros per day for single use; (ii) 8 Euros per person per day for rooms with a balcony; (iii) a 2 Euros tax per person per day for the wellness cur; and (iii) a 10 Euros surcharge per person per day for lunch. Most of these charges are optional, levied on those who want more than the basic package.
Everyone who lodges at the Norica will be entitled to a half-board package which includes, free of any additional charges:
An extensive breakfast buffet with bio-corner;
A choice of 4 different courses at dinner;
Use of Hotel Norica's own thermal water indoor swimming pool, sauna, aroma steam bath, and juice bar;
Unlimited entry to the Alpen Therme; and
Bath robe.
These amenities, if priced separately, as they would be at most spa hotels in Austria, would add up as much as the lodging fees. And yet they will be available for free to attendees that book a room at the Norica.

A Complimentary Day Trip to Schlossalm Mountain (June 2)
Enjoying an unforgettable view of the world
You can't fully experience the high mountains covered with luscious pastures bathing in fresh air without getting on top of the Gasteiner Valley and marvel in the panorama that unfolds below you. Tranquility and regeneration blend in with an alpine journey of discovery when comfortable and modern facilities lift you to the two stations on Bad Hofgastein's Schlossalm Mountain. The first station, known as the Middle Station, is 1,302 meters above sea level while the Summit Station is 2,050 meters above sea level.
We recommend taking the cable car straight to the Summit Station and then walking down the zigzagging mountain paths amidst breathtaking views to the Middle Station. On the way down, one is bound to run into mountain farmers and their shacks from which they sell refreshments. Upon arriving at the Middle Station, one may take the cable car to the base.
For those who are not good walkers, a simple lunch at the Summit Station's restaurant could be followed by a short stroll outside the station and the next hourly cable car down to the base.
Originally, we had planned to visit Stubnerkogel (in neighboring Bad Gastein) since its summit station is slightly higher at 2,230 meters above sea level. However, the ongoing engineering works at Stubnerkogel forced us to look for a more pristine experience within the Hohe Tauern range of mountains.
From the Norica Hotel, one may easily walk to the Schlossalm cable car base at one end of Bad Hofgastein. On Tuesday, June 2, IJAS representatives will be at the cable car base and will provide complimentary return-tickets, valid for both stations, just before the following trips: 8:00 am, 9:00 am, 10:00 am, 11:00 am and noon. The cable car operates every hour. Delegates should keep in mind that the last descent is at 4:40 pm.

A Complimentary Day Trip to Salzburg (June 3)
Salzburg is unique. (Photo by Christopher Chan)
According to a survey carried out among 23,000 Condé Nast Traveller readers, Salzburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the top cities in Europe. In fact, the readers chose Salzburg asthe third most beautiful city in Europe.
According to the same magazine, The Sound of Music turned Salzburg into a Hollywood myth, synonymous with singing nuns, but the city is nevertheless one of the most beautiful locations, right in the Alps. Chic, cosmopolitan and stylish, its architecture has an Italianate feel - a cross between rugged medieval and delicate rococo facades. Its biggest claim to fame is as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, born in the city in 1756. But the city's culture doesn't stop here, and despite a conservative reputation it has become increasingly avant-garde, with museums showcasing modern art by Klimt and Kokoschka and shows by contemporary artists. Even its location is appealing - its castle, churches and palaces are cradled within a scenic ring of mountains. Because it is so small, conference attendees may wander around easily and stroll through its narrow streets of ancient history.
Early Bird Special
An afternoon hike will be organized on Sunday, May 31, 2009, the day before the official conference starts. This will introduce our conference attendees to the surrounding countryside and its majestic mountains. The hike, originating from the Norica Hotel, will last about 2 to 3 hours and is open to all, including guests. As always, IJAS doesn't charge any fees for off-premises activities.
For those who would arrive at Bad Hofgastein after a long international journey, it will be an opportunity to fill their lungs with fresh air. After the walk, they may then go on their own for their first swim at the Therme to soothe their sore muscles.
